Hummingbirds sporting shiny magenta feathered heads collect nectar from 'sticky monkey,' little trumpet flowers the color of papaya, chopped into an exotic salsa, with leaves like tattoo stickers. A field of cacti, not native to these parts, offer their prickly fruit, with holes the size of marbles pecked through. These are dangerous plates to steal from, unless hunger is winged and aquiline. Desires' prayer is made palpable by thorny beauty, the illusion being that only birds have dominion over spring - as if it would never come again! In August, the pink flowered 'naked lady' will replace the ivory calla lily of March. |
